Nigeria have given up on Granada star Isaac Success, as Victor Osimhen will take his place. Success was originally listed in the final squad for the upcoming Caf Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations, but his club in Spain have bucked the request for his release. Nigeria may likely now be fined for the late change to get Fifa under-17 goal king Osimhen as a swap.
The Under-23 Afcon in Senegal is seen as key for Nigeria as the nation looks to provide ready material for the Super Eagles in future. Osimhen sensationally netted 10 goals at the Under-17 World Cup in Chile.
The Under-23 Afcon games will be played in Dakar and M'bour, and the top three teams will also earn a spot each at next year's Olympics.
Nigeria head coach Samson Siasia has also named three foreign-based players in his 21-man squad, including Taiwo Awoniyi, who is on loan from Liverpool to German side FSV Frankfurt.
But the unavailability of Success cannot be understated, for the player's form would have greatly boosted the team's chances at the Afcon. Granada, struggling in La Liga, have made it clear that they will not let Success go.
