Osun State now popularly known as the State of Osun was created on August 27, 1991 from part of the old Oyo State. The state's name was derived from the River Osun, the venerated natural spring that is the manifestation of the Yoruba goddess of the same name

Osun is an inland state in south-western Nigeria. Its capital is Osogbo. It is bounded in the north by Kwara State, in the east partly by Ekiti State and partly by Ondo State, in the south by Ogun State and in the west by Oyo State.

Every year, adherents and non-adherents of #Osun, one of the Orisa (the traditional deities of the Yoruba people), travel from all over the world to attend the annual Osun-Osogbo festival in August.

Visitors include nationals of Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad, Grenada, and other nations in America with a significant Yoruba cultural heritage.

Annual traditional festivities and invocations of the Osun goddess are held along the banks of the river bearing her name into which according to Yoruba Oratory traditions she transformed.

Osun-Osogbo Grove, the shrine of the annual rites of the deity and an important artistic center, was declared a World Heritage Site in 2005.

Osun is home to several of Nigeria's most famous landmarks, including the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria's pre-eminent institution of higher learning. The university is located in the ancient town of Ile-Ifẹ, an important early center of political and religious development for Yoruba culture.

The former Governor of the State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola launched and laid the foundation for the groundbreaking of Osun State University with six campuses (Osogbo, Okuku, Ikire, Ejigbo, Ifetedo, and Ipetu-Ijesha) strategically located across the state.

Some of the major achievements of the present governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola's administration since assumption into office include the newly constructed ultra modern middle and elementary schools located in the nooks and crannies of the state, job creation for the youth with O'yes(Osun youth empowerment scheme), the Agba Osun scheme to cater for the needs of the elderlys in Osun, the Tablet of Knowledge(Opon Imo), road constructions across the state to mention but a few.

To celebrate Osun at 25, a calisthenics display was organised by the state government at the Osogbo City Stadium.

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State was ably represented by his deputy, Yetunde Onanuga, who also appreciated the Governor while Governor Ambode of Lagos State, sent a representative to celebrate with Osun at 25. Traditional rulers and other eminent personalities were not left behind to grace the occasion.

In his closing remark, Governor Rauf Aregbesola appreciated the past governors for coming to celebrate Osun at 25. He applauded the Osun at 25 organising committee, headed by Dr. Charles Akinola for putting together such a laudable event.

Governor Aregbesola noted that,

"The calisthenics programme is not only an out-of-school sports activity but a lifestyle-change project for building a new generation of students who are physically fit, mentally sound and socially well-adjusted.

And we are not alone in this view. We have history to draw upon, and this is also supported by practices in other lands and climes. Even the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) regards physical education programmes as part of its crucial brief...."

BEB family wishes Osun many more prosperous years.

Long live the State of Osun!!!
