Away fans could return to stadiums by mid-May

Away fans could be allowed back at Premier League matches for the final two rounds of the season, following a change in stance from the government.

Only home fans have been permitted to attend top-flight games since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Up to 500 away fans could be allowed to watch games in May's final two matches.

The Premier League has also moved round 37 fixtures back to midweek, 18-19 May, so each club has one home game with fans before the end of the season.

From 17 May, outdoor sports venues are due to be allowed up to 10,000 fans or 25% capacity, whichever figure is lower.

An email from Premier League chief executive Richard Masters to clubs on Thursday revealed that the government is set to allow up to 5% of the capacity to be made up of away fans.

Therefore, clubs have been asked to respond by the close of play on Friday on whether they are in favour of welcoming up to 500 away fans and whether they think it would be possible, given they would need local authority approval.

Bayern president refutes claims of record-breaking €25m fee for Nagelsmann

Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has refuted suggestions that the deal to make Julian Nagelsmann the club's new manager could cost the German champions up to €25 million (£22m/$30m).

A compensation package is due to Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig after Bayern moved quickly to make a domestic rival their long-term successor to the departing Hansi Flick.

Various figures have been mooted in that agreement, from €15m (£13m/$18m) upwards, but Hainer claims there is little substance to the speculation in what is said to be a record-breaking deal for a coach.

Bayern president Hainerhas told Abendzeitung:
"We had to find an agreement with Leipzig because Julian Nagelsmann was still bound there. Do not believe all the numbers that were being rumored."
Justifying a big-money move for the 33-year-old, Hainer added: "FC Bayern are one of the best teams in Europe, and they also need a top coach. We managed to do that by signing Julian Nagelsmann."

Asher-Smith set for Diamond League opener

British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith will face a high-quality field in her opening race of the 2021 season.

The 200m world champion will line up against four-time world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Olympic 100 and 200m champion Elaine Thompson-Herah in the 100m at the Muller Grand Prix in Gateshead on the 23 May.

Briton Amy Hunt, who is the world under-18 record-holder for 200m, and in-form American, Sha'Carri Richardson, will also join the line-up for the opening Diamond League event of 2021.

The race will provide an early indication of athletes' form as they prepare for this summer's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Asher-Smith, who has only run in two 60m indoor races this year, said on social media:
"It's my first Diamond League since 2019 and I can't wait. It's been a long time coming!
"I'm so excited to get back out there, running the 100m."
The meeting was originally scheduled to take place in Rabat, Morocco, but was relocated to the North East of England because of the coronavirus pandemic.

British Athletics has said it is hoping to be able to welcome back fans "in some capacity to the event", but is also "remaining flexible" with ticket sales in order to stay in line with the government's roadmap announcement.

Parker beats Chisora by split decision after recovering from early knockdown

Joseph Parker recovered from being knocked down in the opening 10 seconds to beat Derek Chisora on a split decision and keep alive hopes of a shot at the world heavyweight title.

The Briton floored New Zealander Parker at Manchester Arena with an overhand right to the temple.
But the former world champion turned the tide and landed combinations as the bout wore on, while Chisora tired.

It proved enough to earn a split decision 115-113 111-116 115-113. Chisora, 37, felt aggrieved by the scoring and said:
"I'm beyond getting upset now. It's difficult. I train hard. I put pressure on, this is the treatment I get from boxing.
"I was bringing it. I was doing more power punches and inside work. I won't let them slow me down. I will go again. I will not let them win. They want to see me retiring but I am not yet."
