29-Year-Old Becomes India’s First Transgender Judge

Joyita Mondal Mahi has become a judge of a Lok Adalat. It is a mediation style of dispute settlement, often referred to as the people’s courts. Mondal’s first day on the job was on July 8. She was working in a district in West Bengal.

‘In most of the cases, I suggested negotiation which the litigants found acceptable,’ Mondal told The Hindustan Times. Mondal has been a long-term advocate for LGBTI issues. But said she was chosen to be a Lok Adalat because she was a social worker.

Two years ago, Mondal setup a home for elderly people living with HIV and specialized welfare committees. It was this work that caught the attention of district administration. She was soon recommended to become a Lok Adalat judge.
