Governor Aregbesola-BolaEshosBlog

Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on Monday described all those behind the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections as the real enemies of the masses and progress in Nigeria.

He said the elections adjudged world wide as the most free and fair in the history of Nigeria would have served as a spring baord of an all round development of the country if the winner, Alhaji Mushood Abiola was allowed to rule the country.

Ogbeni Aregbesola stated this in Osogbo while speaking at a programme to mark the 24th anniversary of the June 12, 1993 presidential elections.

While highlighting the major significance of the annulled election, the Governor stressed that Chief Abiola's genuin intentions for the country was to end poverty in all totalty.

He said the late Abiola meant total growth and development for the common man and to barnish poverty hence the tagging of his manifesto "Farwell To Poverty".

He lamented that an election which was devoid of any violence or disturbance in every part of the country could be annulled without any tangible reason, saying that the annulment of the election is the reason why the country is going through hardship today.

He said, "One major significance of the annulled June 12 elections is that M.K.O Abiola wanted poverty to be a thing of the past in Nigeria.
"Abiola meant total growth for the common man, that's why he tagged his manifesto "farwel to poverty ", he attempted to barnish poverty in spheres of the Nigerian life.
"Its a pity that the elections adjudged to be the most free and fair in the history of Nigeria was annulled withouth any tangible reason.
"If Abiola was allowed to rule for just four years, I can bet it with anybody that Nigeria would have been a better place today.
"The truth is that those behind the annulment of that election are the real enemies of the common man in Nigeria, they are also the enemies of growth and development of the country". He stressed.
Speaking on the need for Nigeria to grow and develop beyond its current state, Aregbesola stated that the growth of Nigeria is very key to the development of the black man all around the world.

He said for any black man from any part the world to be viewed with dignity and respect, Nigeria needs to be great, stressing that among every two or three black man in any part of the world is a Nigerian.

The governor stated further that if the nation must move forward, then every Nigerian must begin to have a collective mind and do away with self.

He argued that the best form of governance that can speedily move the country forward is the parliamentary system of government, stressing that it will go a long way in reducing the cost of governance.
"It is funny that if Nigeria does not progress as a nation the entire black race in the world is doomed.
"Nigeria must grow and develop if we want the black man to viewed with dignity and respect, we must begin to do away with self if we want to move forward as a nation.
"We need to go back to the parliamentary system of government in a bid to reduce the cost of running government in Nigeria". Aregbesola stated.
Speaking on the topic: "24 years after June12, challenges of democracy in Nigeria" Dr Oyebade Olowogboyega noted that one of the major challenges of democracy in Nigeria is that the country spends too much money on elections at the detriment of other sectors.
He also stated that the incessant feud between Labour leaders and government as well as industrial actions has also hampered the growth of democracy in the country.
"We spend too much money conducting elections at the expense of other key sectors like the education sector, I don't think this is good at all".
