Van Dijk, Gomez return from injury for Liverpool

Liverpool defenders Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez returned to action following lengthy spells out through injury.

Dutchman Van Dijk, 30, has been out for nine months after surgery on anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) damage suffered against Everton last October.

Gomez, 24, has missed eight months after suffering a knee injury in training with England in November.

Both players appeared as second half substitutes in Liverpool's 4-3 friendly loss against Hertha Berlin in Austria.
"It was a nice feeling," said manager Jurgen Klopp regarding the pair's return. "260-something days for Virg and not much less for Joe they didn't play football, so it's nice to have them back. It was the first step, really important."

Manchester City make £100m bid for Grealish

Manchester City have made an English record £100m bid for Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish.
City manager Pep Guardiola has made the 25-year-old English midfielder one of his major targets.
It is understood there has been communication between the two Premier League clubs throughout the summer.

City have made their move before Grealish returns to Villa for the start of pre-season training at Bodymoor Heath next week.

Guardiola feels Grealish can add an extra dimension to City's attack and propel them to the Champions League title for the first time, which they missed out on last season when they were beaten in the final by Chelsea.

The fee, which would eclipse the £89m Manchester United paid for Paul Pogba in 2016 as the highest ever paid by an English club, underlines how keen Guardiola is to have Grealish in his squad.

Thompson-Herah defends 100m Olympic title

Elaine Thompson-Herah became the second-fastest woman in history as she beat fellow Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to retain her Olympic 100m title.

The 29-year-old ran 10.61 seconds, a new Olympic record and just 0.12secs short of the world record set by the US' Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988.

Shericka Jackson completed a Jamaican one-two-three in Tokyo with a time of 10.76, 0.02 behind Fraser-Pryce.

Fraser-Pryce, who qualified fastest for the final, found herself under pressure almost immediately from the gun as her usual whip-smart start did not fire as expected.

With the long-striding Thompson-Herah on her shoulder, Fraser-Pryce tensed up over the final 30 metres.

Thompson-Herah's lead was comfortable enough for her to salute the clock and photographers as she crossed the line in a time that matches Griffith-Joyner's second-fastest time.

It also sets a new Olympic record.

Thompson-Herah, who came third in the Jamaican trials earlier this year, relished her victory over her domestic rivals, with silver little consolation to a grim-faced Fraser-Pryce.

Durant becomes highest-scoring player in team USA history

Kevin Durant became the highest-scoring player in Team USA history as they booked a quarter-final spot at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Brooklyn Nets forward, 32, finished with 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists as the USA beat the Czech Republic 119-84.

That takes his Olympic career total to 354 points from three Games, putting him ahead of Carmelo Anthony's 336.

Team USA will discover their quarter-final opponents in Sunday's draw.
France, who beat the USA in the opening match, beat Iran 79-62 to finish top of group A, while Australia cemented their place at the vtop of group B with a 89-76 win over Germany.
