Nigeria qualify for Cup of Nations with Benin win

Nigeria are through to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations - but Group L rivals Benin will have to wait after conceding an injury time goal to the Super Eagles and losing 1-0 in Porto Novo.

Nigeria had already been confirmed as having qualified for the tournament in Cameroon next year thanks to a 0-0 draw between Lesotho and Sierra Leone earlier in the day.

That result also meant Benin only needed a point from the game at home against Nigeria, and they held out for 93 minutes - until Paul Onuachu scrambled in Nigeria's winner deep into injury time.

The Benin players looked completely shocked as the final whistle blew just moments later.

The result means that Sierra Leone now take on Benin in Freetown on Tuesday knowing that if they win, they will match Benin on points. If that happens, their head-to-head record will be equal at that point - both having won a game each - so they will be separated on goal difference.

Ronaldo storms off pitch after being denied clear winner

Cristiano Ronaldo stormed off the pitch at full time when he was denied a stoppage-time winner in Portugal's 2-2 draw in Serbia.

Liverpool's Diogo Jota scored two headers for the Group A favourites before Serbia fought back in their World Cup qualifier.

Aleksandar Mitrovic pulled one back before Filip Kostic slotted in.
But the visitors were furious when Ronaldo's late effort was judged not to have crossed the line.

The Juventus forward thought he had scored with his angled shot and was aghast when the officials ruled he had not. There was no goalline technology available for the match.

Portugal's all-time leading scorer was booked for protesting, and at the final whistle threw his captain's armband to the turf and stormed down the tunnel at the Rajko Mitic Stadium in Belgrade.
"There are moments which are tough to digest especially when we feel the entire nation is being punished," Ronaldo said on Instagram. "We will keep our heads up and move on to the next challenge."

Whyte knocks out Povetkin in rematch

Dillian Whyte kept alive his hopes of a heavyweight world title shot by emphatically gaining revenge over Alexander Povetkin with an impressive knockout win in their rematch.

The Briton, 32, showed smart timing from the off in Gibraltar before a decisive attack in the fourth round.

A right hand sent Povetkin backwards, another sent him into the ropes and a left hook floored him heavily.

He found his feet but was rightly stopped to suffer his third loss.

Only Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko had previously beaten Povetkin in 39 fights.
Some questioned if Whyte was right to take an immediate rematch after a horrific knockout defeat by
the Russian in August but after four well-crafted rounds, BBC Radio 5 Live commentator Mike Costello said his performance would "reverberate" around the heavyweight division.

Verstappen takes pole position at Bahrain Grand Prix ahead of Hamilton

Red Bull's Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes to take a stunning pole position at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Dutchman was 0.388 seconds quicker than Hamilton, as Red Bull made good on the pace the world champion had always said they had before the season.

This performance from Verstappen confirms his status as a genuine title contender to Hamilton and raises the prospect of a scintillating championship battle.

Meanwhile, Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas was third, ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Pierre Gasly's Alpha Tauri.

Red Bull's Sergio Perez was 11th and Sebastian Vettel 18th for Aston Martin.
