Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been named the 2017 Confederation of African Football Player of the Year.

The 25-year-old, who has scored 17 Premier League goals this season, helped Egypt reach the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations final in 2017.

He finished ahead of Liverpool team-mate and Senegal winger Sadio Mane.

Mane and Salah attended the ceremony in Ghana's capital Accra, 24 hours before Friday's FA Cup game against Everton.

Borussia Dortmund and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came third.
"Winning this award is a dream come true, 2017 was an unbelievable year for me," Salah said after receiving the trophy.
"I would like to dedicate it to all the kids in Africa and Egypt, I want to tell them to never stop dreaming, never stop believing."

Costa Scores On Atletico Return

Diego Costa took just five minutes to score for Atletico Madrid in their 4-0 win over Lleida in his first appearance since rejoining from Chelsea.

Chelsea sold the striker in the summer but he has been unable to play for Atletico until the January transfer window opened.

He was only fit enough for a place on the bench in the Copa Del Rey clash but was introduced with his team 2-0 up on 65 minutes.

Costa was straight into the action as he started the move that finished with him flicking home a near-post cross from Juanfran.

It helped wrap up a routine win for Atletico in the first leg of their last-16 clash with the Spanish third division side, after defender Diego Godin and Costa's fellow former Chelsea striker Fernando Torres gave them a two-goal half-time lead.

Antoine Griezmann completed the scoring in stoppage time following the late dismissal of Lleida defender Marc Trilles.

Tiger Woods will continue his competitive comeback at the Farmers Insurance Open later this month.

The 14-time major winner underwent back surgery last April and was sidelined for almost 10 months.

However, the 42-year-old returned in December at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas and will now play his first PGA Tour event for a year at Torrey Pines from 25-28 January.

He will also compete at the Genesis Open in Los Angeles next month.

Woods made his PGA Tour debut at the The Riviera Country Club in 1992 as an amateur and his company now manages the tournament, which runs from 15-18 February.

He has not taken part in the tournament since 2006.
"To be able to play in an event that I used to come to as an amateur is a dream come true," Woods said.

Williams Pulls Out Of Australian Open

Former world number one Serena Williams has withdrawn from this month's Australian Open in Melbourne.

The 36-year-old American last week played her first match since giving birth in September.
Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner and the reigning Australian Open champion, said: "Although I am super close, I'm not where I want to be."

Williams was eight weeks pregnant with daughter Olympia when she won her seventh Australian Open title in 2017.

The world number 22 said:
"My coach and team always said 'only go to tournaments when you are prepared to go all the way'.
"I can compete - but I don't want to just compete, I want to do far better than that and to do so, I will need a little more time.
"The memory of last year's Open is one that I will carry with me, and Olympia and I look forward to coming back again."
Williams lost an exhibition contest against Jelena Ostapenko in Abu Dhabi on 30 December 2017, in her first match since giving birth in September.

It is the first time since 2011 that Williams has missed the tournament.
