Workers Strike Paralyze Government Activities In Ondo

Government activities has been paralyzed in Ondo state following the strike embarked upon by all categories of workers in the state.

Workers in the employment of the state government boycotted all government offices, schools, hospitals and other public offices in the state in total compliance with the directive by the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The strike also affected academic and non academic programmes in all public primary and secondary schools in the state as teachers boycotted the schools.

The state Chairman of the NLC, Mrs Bosede Daramola who spoke with newsmen maintained that the strike would continue untill the state government honours an agreement reached with the labour to pay two out of the five months outstanding salaries.

The NLC chairman who monitored the compliance of workers in the state to the strike, stressed that the workers are not ready to shift ground on the indefinite strike which commenced on Tuesday.

But the state government in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information, Mr Kayode Akinmade appealed to the striking workers to resume work and continue negotiation with the state government.

Akinmade noted that the economic crunch in the country has effects on the economy of all the states of the federation, hence the inability of the government to pay its workforce.

He said the implementation of the recommendations of the 2014 National Political Confab would proffer solution to the economic problems confronting the country, and thereby called on prominent Nigerians to prevail on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure full implementation of the recommendations.

Meanwhile, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended the labour unions in the state for embarking on strike to press home their demand, describing the action as long over due.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the APC in the state, Mr Steve Otaloro in a statement said the workers had suffered greatly in the hands of the state government in the last five months due to non-payment of their salaries.

He attributed the inability of the state government to pay the workers to wasteful spending on the part of the government.

The APC spokesman also challenged the state Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko to account for the bail out fund released to the state by the Federal Government.
